Suddenly, we slept in one world and woke up in another. Disney has no more magic and Paris is no longer romantic.
Suddenly, in New York everyone sleeps. And the Great Wall of China is no longer a fortress.
Suddenly, hugs and kisses become weapons. Holding hands and walking the parks become outlawed.
Suddenly, not visiting aging parents and grandparents becomes an “act of love”.
Suddenly, our bombs and machine guns, our tanks and artillery begin to gather dust.
Suddenly, we realize power doesn’t rest with us alone. And that money has little value when it can’t even buy you toilet paper.
Suddenly, we have been put back in our place by the hands of the universe.
And we’ve been made aware how vulnerably “human” we truly are, when faced with a microbe so powerfully inhumane.

I saw this posted somewhere and it really hit me how this worldwide pandemic has revealed how vulnerable and powerless we humans really are—but let me add some further thoughts.

The Bible infuses some amazing HOPE into our situation:

LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name throughout the earth! You made your glory higher than heaven! . . . When I look up at your skies, at what your fingers made— the moon and the stars that you set firmly in place— what are human beings that you think about them; what are human beings that you pay attention to them? . . . You’ve made them only slightly less than divine, crowning them with glory and grandeur. You’ve let them rule over your handiwork, putting everything under their feet. (Psalms‬ ‭8:1, 3-6‬ ‭CEB)‬‬

WITHOUT A BELIEF IN GOD, we truly are “vulnerable humans facing a microbe so powerfully inhuman.”

BUT the Bible reveals that we are more than a few atoms that evolved. We were created in God’s image—given rule and authority, given knowledge and creativity, given the capacity to love!

God loves His creation so much that even when we turned from Him, He came to earth Himself to call us back from our sin and our destructive lifestyles, from our pride and self-sufficiency. If nothing else, this virus has given us pause to consider how we are spending our time on earth and what we believe about life after death. If you need a refresher on God’s plan for this tiny planet called earth and mankind, pick up your Bible this week. Read the gospel of John. Pray a simple prayer asking God to reveal Himself to you.

As we celebrate both Passover and Resurrection Sunday (Easter) in the coming week, look up. Let your HOPE be in the God who created us and loves us. All He asks is that we come before Him humbly, confessing that we are incapable of saving ourselves and accept His gift of salvation through Jesus Christ.
